Lymphedema Treatment

Reduce swelling and improve function. We can help.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition that occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, leading to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the tissues often resulting in swelling, discomfort, and impaired function in the affected body part(s).

Evaluation

During an evaluation for lymphedema, we gather the patient's medical history, conduct a physical examination, measure limb circumference, and skin integrity.

This comprehensive evaluation aids in accurately diagnosing lymphedema and determining the most suitable treatment plan.

Treatment

Complete Decongestive Therapy can treat your lymphedema effectively and is comprised of four components.

  • This specialized massage technique effectively stimulates the natural flow of lymphatic fluid, encouraging its movement and removal from the affected area. MLD employs gentle and rhythmic motions, ensuring a soothing and non-invasive experience for the individual receiving the treatment. By facilitating the lymphatic system's drainage process, MLD can promote enhanced healing, reduce swelling, and provide relief in areas impacted by lymphatic congestion or dysfunction.

  • A therapeutic approach utilizing external pressure to the affected area to reduce swelling and promote proper lymphatic fluid flow. It typically involves the use of compression garments, such as bandages, stockings, or sleeves, which exert graduated pressure on the limb or body part affected by lymphedema. The compression garments are designed to be tighter at the distal end (closer to the extremity) and gradually loosen as they move toward the proximal end (closer to the body). This gradient of pressure assists in pushing excess fluid out of the affected area, helping to alleviate swelling, improve lymphatic circulation, and manage the symptoms of lymphedema.

When completing the intensive phase, patients transition to a custom or noncustom compression garment. You will not be discharged until we feel your garment provides the appropriate amount of pressure and is comfortable.

Compression therapy is often used as a long-term management strategy for individuals with lymphedema, and it can be combined with other treatment modalities such as manual lymphatic drainage and exercise to optimize results.

  • Through targeted exercises, the muscle joint pump is stimulated, promoting improved fluid circulation and reducing swelling. We collaborate with you to ensure that the exercise program is tailored to your condition, optimizing its effectiveness in managing lymphedema and promoting overall well-being.

  • People with lymphedema face an elevated risk of infection. A physical therapist can play a pivotal role in mitigating this risk by providing valuable education on essential skin care and hygiene practices. We will teach you techniques to keep your skin clean, moisturized, and protected.

Education & Support

A physical therapist is a valuable resource for those seeking to prevent the worsening of lymphedema. At Davis Care we teach techniques and lifestyle modifications that empower individuals to take an active role in their lymphedema management, promoting better control over symptoms and preventing further deterioration.

Sandi has been a Godsend. In three months the difference she has made in the way my legs look has been night and day. I used to hate the way people would stare at my legs when I walked down the street. Now I’m the one who can’t stop staring at my skinny ankles and calves. If you follow her instructions, you will achieve the results you want. Sandi knows what she’s doing and I can’t thank her enough for this life-changing experience.
